Indianapolis Art Center

The Art Center has pulled out all the stops in creating the funnest, most interactive Open House ever! Starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, every single studio, and then some, will be open with easy hands-on art activities designed to excite you about art. All activities are for both adults and children. And in addition to the Art Center member discount, each studio will offer additional discounts good for the night only. You won’t want to miss any of the activities, including:

The Ribbon Burning
Come early to join in a toast to our new state-of-the-art equipment in the glass studio. The ribbon burning will be at 5:30 p.m.

Musical Chairs
Without the chairs. And with an art twist! Pick an easel, start drawing and when the music stops, move to the next easel.

Acrylics, Watercolor, Pastels...and Crayons!
This room will be a flurry of color with two activities. In one, you'll use a straw, eye dropper, even a credit card, to create a vibrant, colorful underwater world. No paintbrushes allowed! In the other, you'll get tips and tricks for drawing. And you can keep the crayon!

Be a Star
Get camera tips as you take photos of each other and then take a seat in our Photography lab to learn a few tricks in PhotoShop!

Walk on the Dark Side
Our dark room is open, so feel free to step through the revolving door to see photographers at work developing film.

Print Your Own Gift Cards
We have wood and linoleum blocks ready for you to get a feel for the printing press. Then take a turn at creating your own design, maybe your initial, to print a gift card.

iPad Painting
Bring your iPad for a quick lesson in creating.

Wonders in Wood
Catch a fascinating display of artistry in wood.

Make Your Own Sculpture
You'll get a taste of creating a mini-sculpture in our Steel & Stone Studio.

Revelry in Jewelry
You'll get to try your hand at different techniques in metalsmithing to create a pair of earrings.

Yats is back! This popular Art Center fundraiser features Yats free with every purchase of a student- or faculty-made ceramic bowl. All proceeds benefit Art Center programs. Be sure to stop by to meet the people behind your purchase—many of the students and faculty will be in the Ceramics studios all evening to help you spin your own pot or hand-build your own ceramic creation!

Established in 1934 during the Great Depression, the Indianapolis Art Center is a not-for-profit community arts organization offering 300 art classes, workshops and samplers each semester for all ages and all art abilities, art exhibitions and ARTSPARK, a 12-acre outdoor creativity and sculpture park.
