In The Community

Staff and instructors of the Art Center's Outreach programs and educational outreach programming strive to stimulate and strengthen the role of the arts in underserved communities throughout the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Outreach efforts are targeted at reaching underserved audiences by bringing high quality art education and artistic experiences to community centers and organizations, churches and schools in these locations. Each year these programs serve more than 5,000 individuals.

The Art Center's Outreach department fulfills this mission through several programs:

An important objective of our outreach programs is to provide an atmosphere where students' creativity can flourish within the structure of Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE) curriculum. DBAE is a method of art education that incorporates history, criticism, aesthetics and production, all of which play important roles in the creation and understanding of art. DBAE is a central component of all Art Center education programming because it engages the students with concepts and practices that are applicable and relevant to life outside the classroom.
